Our Favorite and Best Ceramic Glazes and Paints

When it comes to ceramic underglaze, glaze or paint the choices can be overwhelming. The reality is that you’ve already put in all your time and effort in creating your piece, the last thing you want to do is pick inferior glazes and paints that will compromise your effort. That’s why we’ve put together this list of our favorite and best ceramic glazes and paints sets. Perfect for experienced artists that want to experiment with new color and design palettes or beginners who are looking to establish an array of colors and textures for their newly acquired hobby.

So, let’s start out with the differences between each before jumping to our list.  After all, when and what you use matters.

  • Underglaze – Usually split into three categories:
    1.  Engobe. Containing glass and silica engobes are usually applied to bisque ware.
    2.  Colored slips. These can usually be applied to clay while it’s still wet. It consists of a mixture of clay, water and pigment. Think of it as colored mud you can paint with.
    3.  Traditional underglazes. Our list is made up of mostly these kinds of glazes. Mostly made up of metal oxides, these glazes are applied during the greenware stage of your piece and before firing.
  • Glazes:
Glazes can provide your piece with a brilliant or matted finished. Applied during the bisque ware state of your piece, glazes are finishes with pulverized glass that give your piece a watertight smooth ‘glassy’ finish.
  • Paint:
Well, this is straightforward. Paints are… paints.  They are usually acrylic and added after the piece has been fired.  Paints can’t withstand the high heat of a kiln and should be applied as the last step to your piece.

So now that you understand the difference, which pigment, texture and metal oxide ‘bursts’ to go with?  No need to fret fellow artists. We’ve thought of that too.
